Can the U.S. PCB Industry Be Saved?

If you look around the North American PCB landscape, the numbers have certainly dwindled, almost as if someone grabbed the eastern seaboard and shook it out like a blanket, sending most of our manufacturing base to Asia, leaving a scattered few behind to figure out how to survive the next shake.

You certainly can’t put the ketchup back in the bottle, but even still, is there a way the U.S. industry can survive? Since this appears to be today's Million Dollar Question, CircuiTree will take a major swipe at getting an answer. November 8 - 9 we will host a conference in Anaheim, “How to Survive As a North American Manufacturer,” which will feature a full day of technical papers on how to increase technology in your shop all the while improving yield, to be as cost competitive as possible. On the second day we will have a panel discussion led by columnist and Revere Group member Dan Feinberg, with industry representation from across the supply chain. With your help, we will attack the issues, get a bit controversial, and talk about the things some just don’t want to talk about. It’s a matter of survival here. Be sure to mark your calendars and bring your case scenarios and hot-topic questions to our panel.

In advance of the conference, we want to hear from you. What are your questions, recommendations, or thoughts for the future? Don’t pull your punches. Post them on this discussion forum and we will use these as the basis for our conference.

For instance:

Is there lobbying we can do as an industry to remain competitive? SEMI certainly seems to think so with its Secure the Future campaign.

What about the value of the U.S. dollar versus the RMB?

Is anyone really concerned with the component counterfeiting issue?

What about the trade deficit and it’s long-term consequences for our economy?

Title: Not with IPC at the helm

I just heard that IPC is going to eliminate the one full time position in their government relations office and will chang it to one position that is part-time administrator and part-time lobbyist.

If an industry wants a strong government relations program, how can they hope to achieve that if they hire someone for this position who is only dedicating half of their time to build relationships in political circles. What is more, how much can one person achieve in spreading the industry's message on the Hill.

IPC was founded to help the U.S. PCB industry, and they seem to have lost their way. It's time for a change at the top, so that the industry has an effective association that goes to bat for them in D.C.

In trade, survival is assured by being competitive in the market place.
Everyday we see headlines of OEM's moving out in search of cost cutting. Our product can only follow the users. The trend will continue and the scary part is that "they" are getting better at it every year. In my opinion, (32 yrs in this business) there isnt any question that this "industry" will be made up of only a very few "shops" and these shops will never compete on the global scene. They will be serving a small remaining electronics industry.
Can it come back?
The only way for it to come back is for North America to close its borders and start making the stuff we need OURSELVES. We had a great ride 1900-1985, but once we shop outside, we should consider have considered long term consequences instead of lining the pockets of the few who make up ownership of manufacturing: stock holders.
God Bless America is our only hope.
