Does the industry really need a more streamlined manufacturing process or are we just trying to improve a process that works OK today?

The Valor acquisition by Mentor Graphics will provide a design-through-manufacturing solution for the industry. What benefit, if any, do you feel removing some of the barriers between PCB design and manufacturing can bring? Does the industry really need a more streamlined manufacturing process or are we just trying to improve a process that works OK today?

Title: Valor/Mentor

I have worked in the pcb industry and trained pcb manufacturers/designers on software DFM/DRC, panelization, etc.. and the mere problem is that, many designers do not understand how a circuit board is built, the many processes it goes through etc.. Many designers call out specifications on there drawings and don't adhere to the design specification and requirements they want a manufacturer to adhere to. An example would be ipc2221. Many designers do not take manufacturing tolerances into consideration when designing a board. As a CAM Manager, some companies are very open to let someone like myself talk with them about the shortcomings of there design, things they could do to make it better for the manufacturer, while others don't want to listen to you at all. Mergers as such don't necessarily need to happen because the price of the software to utilize this is way too pricey. Personally I would not welcome Valor/Genesis into my company because unless you have a full time script writer, no one can operate the software manually and easily. It is very cumbersome to operate that software if one should have to manipulate something manually. At least the software I have, operators know how to do something manually should the script not work right for a particular situation.

I failed to do a spell check on my last post, so please excuse me for that. On another note, Valor/Genesis software support has not been very hasty with bugs. Bugs get sent to Israel and never to be heard of again, unless something has changed in the past 5 years that I am not aware of. If I have a software bug, I can have developers at my facility within hours/day if need be to address a problem. The support $$$ one pays yearly, is of utmost importance to count on the service provided.
