Shining the light on our readers.

In CircuiTree’s August issue, several of our regular columnists tackled the topic of photovoltaics. In his Fein-Lines column, Dan Feinberg wondered if photovoltaics is perhaps the best opportunity since plated through-hole, catching the eye of one of our readers in Poland. Both of them were kind enough to let me share their exchange with you. We always love to hear from our readers, whether as a response on one of our blogs, a note on the bulletin board, or emails to us or directly to our columnists. Stay in touch, enjoy the following, and let us know if you have anything further to add.

Dear Mr. Feinberg,

…I am a marketing specialist employed in the top Polish PCB producing factory—ELDOS Co. Ltd.—located in Wroclaw, engaged in creating marketing position of our factory in Poland and the European Union.

As a frequent reader of CircuiTree…my boss got interested in the photovoltaic business (much heard about it recently) as a way of diversifying our offer to the market.

He asked me to make abstracts of the three main positions on photovoltaics in the August issue—yours, that of Karl Dietz, and of Happy Holden.

While trying to translate your text to Polish, I found the second sentence in your article beginning with “Let me start off by saying…Al Gore is a genius for riding that horse as long as he can” very confusing.

First, you declare that you do not believe in manmade global warming (possibly, you are right) and than you state that “global warming is the best business strategy of the last decade,” which is completely misguiding to me.

Do you want to say that the topic of unquestioned global process (glaciers of Greenland and Arctic), no matter man- or not manmade, is cynically exploited by world businesses and the process should be continued? How about Mr. Al Gore, who is personally engaged in the fight with the human contribution to the Earth’s atmosphere (am I wrong?)?

Please help me understand your intentions, so that I could be convinced the Americans are working hard on eliminating CO2 emissions for the benefits of all mankind.

With best regards,

Szczepan Kuczwara, Kierownik Dział Marketingu

Dan's response:

Dear Szczepan Kuczwara,

Thank you for reading and for your response to my column. Please forgive my American slang and for being facetious. Basically what I said is that in my opinion, Al Gore is helping to create a false sense of panic, which he then makes a lot of money on through his carbon offset company. By hyping global warming he is creating a bigger market for a business that he owns part of and therefore he makes a great deal of money. While I do not agree with him I have to admire his money making strategy. Much of what Al Gore says is junk science in my humble opinion but he, like many others, has his agenda.

Let me give you an example of misguided priorities, In Europe you have RoHS, which requires the elimination of lead in solder. So 45,000 (aprox.) wave solder machines around the world have to go lead free and therefore raise their temperatures 15 to 20 °C. How much more power, how much more oil must be burned to heat all those thousands of units to higher temperatures? Has this been calculated into the equation? When you consider that many of those are in China where pollution issues have not been as much of a concern, I make a case that the total effect of lead-free laws on the earth, even though made with good intentions, has been negative.

I cannot speak for what all Americans do, just as you cannot be held responsible personally for the poorly thought out lead-free laws, but I can tell you that I personally have solar electric power in my home as well as solar hot water. I will be adding even more solar this year. I use low-power (LED and florescent) lighting. I do personally believe that we should reduce the use of fossil fuels for various reasons. Do I believe in manmade global warming based on the cyclical temperature readings in the ‘90s? Absolutely not!! I believe that the past five and the next 10 years’ readings will prove me correct. To all things there is a cycle.

Dan (Baer) Feinberg

Title: Global warming hoax

I am certainly very happy to hear that you are not buying into the global warming hoax. One thing that bothers me greatly about the quest to reduce CO2 emissions of all the greenies is that CO2 is necessary for life. We cannot eliminate it for that purpose alone. Secondly, the content of CO2 in the atmosphere is on the scale of parts per million and human contribution to that in the entire world is not more than 4% at the worst. We cannot affect it one way or the other and the money people are willing to expend for that purpose boggles my mind.

Title: Global Warming

Thanks Todd, Your comment helps put it in perspective. I remember in the 60's we were going to have a new ice age by the turn of the century. The only thing we seem to be inundated with are various agenda's. I am all for solar but for economic and pro-American reasons, not because of junk science. In any case, we will eventually see who is correct.
