The incredible shrinking phone.

As I’ve mentioned a few times, I tend to have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with technology. While I love new toys, I’m always leery at first. I waited years to get a digital camera, didn’t get a cell phone until my car broke down and left me stranded enough times, and I didn’t get an iPod until Christmas ’05. Perhaps it stems from my parents, who don’t have cable (hello, bunny ears!) and refuse to pay the five cents a month to switch over to touch tone phone service (seriously, bet you didn’t know you could even GET pulse service still). Nonetheless, when I stumbled upon “Time to Return to the Reliable ‘Dumb Phone,’” it gave me a few good laughs, so I thought I would share it with you.

In the editorial, Tony Gabriele tackles the topic of ever-shrinking electronics, which, however trendy and helpful (“Now, of course, your average cell phone is no bigger than a Milky Way. The advantage is, you can carry one around in your pocket without looking like you have an inoperable hip tumor.”), are, ultimately, tiny—not so great for someone with declining eyesight and fat thumbs (creating misspellings that “…mainly communicate the impression that I’m an ignoramus.”) Not to mention…who wants to be so easily reachable? All the time? I know I don’t. Feel free to leave a message on my answering machine, which may or may not be on the fritz…

So take a quick break and have a few laughs with Mr. Gabriele—here’s the link to the full article: www.dailypress.com/news/dp-local_gabriele_1110nov10,0,5562520.column.
