The incredible shrinking phone.
As I’ve mentioned a few times, I tend to have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with technology. While I love new toys, I’m always leery at first. I waited years to get a digital camera, didn’t get a cell phone until my car broke down and left me stranded enough times, and I didn’t get an iPod until Christmas ’05.

We all scream for iPods.
Today I ran across an interesting news release from iSuppli Corp. Apparently, in 2009, more than half (58 percent) of all cars sold in the U.S. will support iPods. This compares to just 39 percent of U.S. vehicle models that are iPod compatible in 2008. A recent iSuppli survey of 2009 model year vehicles proves that automakers are placing greater emphasis than ever before on technology features.

Out of the cave and into the sun.
If you know me at all, you know I’m not likely to call you. I’m going to email you, perhaps even send you a text message. I also work from home, so while many of you “know” me, you probably don’t see me often, if we’ve even met face to face. This usually works fine, given the nature of the industry and what I do (isn’t it my personal duty to support the electronics industry at all costs? Hello, new toys for me!).

Take the last train to Schaumburg.
Just a quick blog post as I prepare to attend my first IPC Midwest show next week in Schaumburg.

Google schmoogle.
I’m a Google girl. I heart Google. I still vividly remember my first day of my first real job, sitting down in my new cube, and my new cubemate saying, “You should check out this new Google thing.” And since that very day, I’ve never once gone back.

Shining the light on our readers.
In CircuiTree’s August issue, several of our regular columnists tackled the topic of photovoltaics. In his Fein-Lines column, Dan Feinberg wondered if photovoltaics is perhaps the best opportunity since plated through-hole, catching the eye of one of our readers in Poland.

A Response to Football, Beer, and PCBs
The following is a reader response to the January Lead Wire column of CircuiTree, "Football, Beer, and PCBs" which touched upon the IPCs battle with the EPA over the recycling of electronic components.

What goes around comes around.
I remember years ago listening to a broadcast of the BBC on public radio. The story was on aid to Africa, specifically technological aid. Seems the average African had little access to electricity at the time. Even in relatively modern South Africa, many did not have access to central power and relied on battery-powered radios for news and information.

Zune-ing into 2009.
So there I sat at my desk in the waning minutes of 2008, staring at my Zune music player and kicking myself in the butt. That morning, I happened to see on my MSN home page that thousands of Zune music players were freezing up when they were powered on. Now, most people would immediately see this as either some sort of time based-virus, or a time-based software glitch that would most likely affect ALL Zune players, right?

Bonding dissimilar materials in electronic packages.
One of the most challenging tasks for electronic materials suppliers might well be bonding chemically dissimilar materials in packages to assure mechanical integrity of the package through thermal cycling, thermal shock, or other environmental stresses or chemical attacks. Conductors and insulating materials tend to have different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) and are chemically sufficiently different (e.g., hydrophilic/hydrophobic, polar/non-polar) so that they don’t like to stick to each other.

Should the Big Three become the Big Two?
A couple of months ago I communicated my displeasure with the financial bailout, wondering where will we draw the line. That line in the sand has been covered up as the Big Three seek financial help.

When will the freakin’ shrinkin’ end??
It seems like on a daily basis, people are asking me how they can put a smaller through-hole into a smaller pad that is attached to a smaller trace. They are asking so that they can design a smaller flex or PBC to go into, you guessed it, a smaller electronic widget. So I have to ask, “When will the freakin’ shrinkin’ end?”
